Prof. Shabbir Moochhala

Researcher

Prof. Moochhala is Adjunct Associate Professor jointly at the Department of Surgery & Pharmacology, Yong Soo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and School of Material Science & Engineering at the National Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. He is also chairman of IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) at Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore as well as a member of the Centre for Biomimetic Sensor Science (CBSS) advisory board, NTU. His research interests combine various subjects including microbiome, synbiotics and postbiotics, novel delivery pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, food safety and food security and point-of-care diagnostic development for field use. He had done pioneering R&D work and successfully completed a number of defence projects in the area of screening, diagnostics and management of soldier performance and survivability in the field. He developed preclinical testing capabilities at DSO National Laboratories based on medical techniques and material (medical devices, drugs and biologics) for early intervention in life-threatening battle injuries (trauma sepsis and wound healing) and enhancement of cognitive and physical performance in the military settings. He collaborated with clinicians from the various hospitals to extrapolate his research to human conditions which includes identifying and validating human biomarkers (“omics” revolution), both discovering and evaluating molecular markers related to differing human conditions and managing these conditions with novel delivery of both pharmaceutical and nutraceuticals. He was also involved in point-of-care (POC) diagnostic development for field use.

He was for several years Centre Head for Centre of Molecular Diagnostics (CMD) and later as Head Centre for Research and Opportunities in Plant Sciences (C.R.O.P. S.) at Temasek Polytechnic. His rich industrial expertise guided TP’s CMD and CROPS towards fulfilling of its objectives for student training and staff development in the field of molecular diagnostics and plant sciences.

Prof. Moochhala is the recipient of numerous prestigious scientific awards and research grants, he has published extensively in top ranking journals, he has been cited in over 12,000 works, and holds many patents.
